Lorraine/Green Garden Township,

Homesteading began in Green Garden Township,the area including the city of Lorraine, about 1872.  All government land had been claimed by 1877.  Land purchase began in 1877, and the township was named for the region in Illinois from which an early group of settlers had come. 

Then, in the mid-1880s, an intersection of two railroads was planned in the township; this became the site of Lorraine.  The town was platted and settlement begun in 1887.  The new community was named in honor of the daughter of a railroad official. 

The town became a commercial center for the surrounding farming community, following the fortunes of the agricultural economy, and later prospered with the discovery of oil in the surrounding countryside. 

Stability has been maintained with the continuity of the local farmers’ coop (organized in 1903), the Lorraine State Bank (organized 1907) and the Baptist Church, which was moved from an earlier site into the town, where it has continued as a life center. 

Education has always been a priority for the citizens of Lorraine and, although there is no longer a public school in the city, it is home to the School District 328 Office for Bushton, Holyrood, Lorraine and Geneseo.
